Shot Show Recap – Day Two

Day two here at Shot Show and we have tons of updates from several more brands.

We started off at the ESEE knives booth. They have a new version of their Izula that is called the Candiru. Its smaller, but just as nasty. There will be tan and orange micarta scales available for the Candiru.

From ESEE’s facebook page, size comparison with the Izula:

Also very exciting, the ESEE Laser Strike is finally ready. For those of you who are not familiar with the Laser Strike, it is an older ESEE model that had been produced by TOPS Knives for a while. It will now be made by ESEE, and its a very cool knife. The micarta scales on the knife fit together to create a cavity that houses a firestarter. This is a nice design that is exciting to see back at ESEE.

There is also a brand new fire kit that will be coming out this year.

Spartan Blades has a couple of new knives this year. One is called the Phrike and it is a smaller, fixed blade with micarta inlays.

From Spartan Blades facebook page:

They also have a new Model 2, which is smaller than the Model 1. I personally have always felt that the Model 1 was a little too large for my hands, so I was very excited to see the smaller version.

Close to the Spartan Blades booth, we discovered a brand that I had not heard of called Medford Knife. They make big, bulky folders and fixed blades that kind of reminded me of some of the stuff Dwaine Carrillo makes. Most of his folders feature Digi Camo G-10 on one scale with a titanium frame lock on the other side. The blade style that are used are unique and I think that a lot of people will really like them.

We stopped by the Kershaw booth to check out the new stuff that they have coming out this year. I wasn’t sold on the Funxion series when I saw them in the catalog, but looking at them in person I like the smooth opening action of the knife. Each of the Funxions comes with a different multi-tool geared for different end uses.

I also was able to flip one of the Kershaw Cryos and this is an excellent knife for the price. It’s a Rick Hinderer design that won’t be too expensive.

Speaking of Rick Hinderer, we checked out several of his Zero Tolerance Knives while we were at the booth. The 560 and 561 both have great opening action, super smooth, and tight tolerances. I pestered one of the guys at the booth to let me see the 777, and I got my hands on one of the prototypes for a minute. This is going to be a very nice knife. It will feature the same folding mechanism that is on the 560.

After Kershaw we went to the Spyderco booth. Spyderco had tons of prototypes and concept models that were fun to look at. I was able to talk to Ed Schempp about some of his knives. Ed is a really nice guy and was fun to listen to. He showed me a concept model of the Equilibrium, which is a larger version of the Balance. There are tons of great new Spyderco knives coming out this year, and we will do a much more thorough post about them once we get back.

CRKT (Colombia River Knife and Tool) has some cool new models out this year as well. They have a smaller version of the popular Nirk Tighe that will be out this year.

A new aluminum version of the Ken Onion designed Ripple will be released this year.

Alan Folts has designed a new neck knife that they are calling the S.P.E.W.

My personal favorite knife at the CRKT booth was the Eraser. It is a new tactical folding knife designed by Liong Mah with a modified tanto blade. This one is going to be very nice.

Leatherman has a new multi-tool out called the Rebar, which is a smaller version of the Super Tool 300. There is also a version of the Style multi-tool called the Style PS that was designed to be TSA compliant.

We stopped by Camillus knives and I have never seen their booth so busy before. They just released a new line of Les Stroud survival knives that should be extremely popular. For those of you who don’t know, Les is the star of the hit “Survivorman” TV show. There are three knives and a machete that will be part of this line.

From the Camillus Home Page:

Bear and Son Cutlery has a brand new balisong that will be released early this year. It is called the Bear Song III and features micarta handles. I have handled a few of Bear’s butterfly knives and this one is going to be a pretty good flipper. The nice thing about the Bear line is that you don’t have to break the bank in order to purchase a decent balisong. Bear has really expanded their Bear Ops line of tactical folding knives and there are several new ones this year as well. Bear has also named most of their knives, which is nice because it makes the knives easier to keep track of.

Right next to Bear we discovered a custom knifemaker named Arno Bernard. Arno is from South Africa and carries on the tradition of great knifemakers from that country. His knives kind of look like bushcrafting fixed blades, and are all made with very nice handle materials. Things like giraffe bone, abalone, and several beautiful wood combinations. The fit and finish on these were superb.

Cheetah Model – Desert Ironwood

Meerkat Model – Giraffe Bone

We stopped by the Meyerco booth and saw Darrell Ralph. He showed us a bunch of balisongs that he had been working on as part of his DRT (Darrel Ralph Tactical) line. He also had several custom Gunhammers at the booth with damascus blades and bronze hardware. These are going to be a limited run of 30 and they look really cool. HTM has incorporated Darrell’s Maxx Glide opening technology into most of their knives now, and it seems like most of them open much smoother now. There is a brand new knife called the Bull Whip that looks like it will be a big success. Jeff Hall has teamed up with Meyerco to make a new line of assisted opening knives that look like they are going to be really popular as well.

SHOT Show 2012 Recap – Day One

It’s SHOT show time once again, and BladeHQ was kind enough to allow one of our bloggers to tag along with them this year. We were able to see tons of 2012 products for most of the major knife brands. We will have lots of pictures and updates coming in the next few months with all of the new stuff.

Our show started off quick at the Strider Booth. This is where I got my first chance to look at the SJ75, a relatively new titanium framelock mini folder. This is a stout little knife that would be ideal for almost any gentleman’s carry. Those guys who are big Strider fans, but generally like a smaller knife are going to love this one.

Ontario Knife Company is probably best known for making excellent survival fixed blades. They have had an affiliation with Randall’s Adventure and Training, which gives them an expertise working with survival knives.

The Blackbird SK-5 is a sturdy fixed blade knife that has won a couple of knife awards.

We also saw the DPx Gear HEST folder that Ontario is currently manufacturing. Lion Steel is making the majority of the HEST knives, but the Folder II is being produced by Ontario.

TOPS has several new knives they are rolling out this year. One of our favorites was the CUMA TAK-RI designed by Waysun Johnny Tsai. The CUMA TAK-RI is a fixed blade knife that features a kukri shaped blade. The knife is currently being featured in IDW Publishing’s G.I. JOE comic book series “Snake Eyes”. Snake Eyes can be seen slashing Cobra troops with the CUMA TAK-RI.

TOPS also has a number of fixed blade knives that will be coming out with stainless satin blades.

Hogue has a new folding knife called the EX02. This knife is thicker and rounder than the EXo1. The knife will come with a flipper and will also have a variation with no flipper. It should be available really soon.

Hogue also had another prototype called the EX04 which will be coming later this year.

Ka-Bar has several new knives coming out in 2012. They have a brand new Zombie folding knife called the Zombie Mule, which is larger and thicker than the current Zombie folding knife.

This is the Desert Mule folder. The Zombie Mule will have the same look, but will feature a toxic green handle. It will be available in plain and serrated versions.

There is also a brand new Zombie Killing fixed blade knife called the “Chop Stick”. The Zombie line seems to be doing very well for Ka-Bar. There is also an exciting new set of Becker fixed blades called the “Tweeners”. These knives are shorter than the original Beckers and are very cool. The anticipated release date of the Becker Tweeners is March of this year.

Blackhawk has a new fixed blade knife coming out this year called the Gideon. It comes in tanto and drop point versions. We didn’t get to hold the knife, but it looks like it will fit nice in the hand.

Gerber is releasing several new Bear Grylls items this year. There are a few multi-tools, a new survival kit, a canteen, and a knife or two. Gerber has been listening to what people were saying and decided to come out with a plain version of the Ultimate knife. So if you were looking for a non-serrated version, then this is your chance. Gerber said that the plain version would be at your favorite knife store some time at the end of the first quarter this year. Gerber also has a couple of new multi-tools, including one that works as a tripod for your camera. I didn’t play with this multi-tool but it looks like Gerber is trying to do something a little bit more exciting with their multi-tool line.

Many of you will be familiar with Benchmade’s new offerings for the year. They had the model 62 at their booth for us to play with and it is super nice. I know that some guys have been concerned with the weight of the 62, since it is going to be stainless steel instead of titanium. After actually holding the knife in my hand, I can tell you that this is going to be an excellent flipper.

Also we saw the automatic version of the Adamas folding knife. This automatic fires hard and has a solid lock-up. The knife uses the Axis lock mechanism.

Some of you will be familiar with the Boker 715. It was an older knife that worked similarly to an Italian leverlock. Well, Boker has a new knife that is similar to the 715 that could be coming to market soon. There is a new titanium framelock folding knife called the Albatros that is very cool.

Protech had a prototype of the FlyFather butterfly knife at their booth. The FlyFather is going to be an extremely cool butterfly knife when it comes out into production.

They have a new fixed blade knife called the Spindrift which is an Allen Elishewitz design. The most unique thing about this knife was its handle. Each one is 3D machined and contoured G10 with a 154CM blade.

Protech is also releasing a new CA legal automatic knife this year that is thinner than the Runt. Its called the Sprint, and its thinner and more compact. Most people looking for a CA legal automatic knife who didn’t like the Runt felt like it was too thick. So, Protech has made a new knife for all of these people!

SOG has several new knives available this year. The one that is bound to get people talking is called the BladeLight. Its a knife that doubles as a flashlight. No, really. The concept sounded hokey to us at first too. Once we actually took a look at the knife and held it in our hands, we liked it much better than we thought that we would.

SOG is also releasing new satin versions of some of their tomahawks.

Buck Knives has a bunch of new folding knives designed specifically for females by a hunter named Haley Heath. These knives are part of an entire new line called the ErgoHunter Adrenaline series.

There are also several new colors that Buck is adding to the Vantage Force line. The tan looks really good on the Vantage force knives. There will be desert sand (pictured), OD green, and camo.

Ron Hood has also designed a new knife for Buck called the Punk. This knife is smaller than the Hoodlum, but I think it will be just as popular.

USN Tactical Knife Show (G3) 2011 Recap

We just got back from the USN Tactical Knife Show aka “The Gathering” (G3), and wanted to give you a recap of our experience there. For those that don’t know what USN is, it is the Usual Suspects Network, you can view the forum here: http://usualsuspect.net/forums/. Great bunch of people, knife enthusiasts and lovers of all things toxic green! We met lots of great people, and as always… thanks to everyone who we talked to and sold us knives. You can always find lots of toxic green knives at USN as well as some exciting customs, so we tried to get a little bit of everything.

Brands:

Microtech Knives

Microtech had a few prototypes of their new OSS Cobra at the show. These are epic! For the show, they did a version with layered black and gray G-10 handles, and titanium spacers and bolsters. Microtech will be making full production versions of the OSS Cobra soon. We also picked up a USN 2011 Microtech Daytona with a green handle. Microtech has a lot of fun stuff in the works, so expect to see the production Cobra and some manual Socom Elites soon!

Protech

Protech Knives had several customs specifically for the G3 event. We loved the Don with “toxic green” scales. We also saw several more prototypes of the Protech Dark Angel. This knife is sexy, and will be a huge hit once they get to the production stage. Dave at Protech is always a pleasure to talk to and has some fun items in the works.

Spyderco

Spyderco was at the show with lots of their upcoming knives in tow. We got another look at the Centofante Memory, that knife is going to fly off of the shelves. It’s nicer than I remembered.  Spyderco also gave us a look at a Sprint Run Dodo with Orange scales! They must be listening to all the people clamoring for a new sprint run of this knife. This probably wont be breaking news for most people who have been paying attention to rumblings out of Golden, but we saw it and the knife looks awesome.

Sniper Bladeworks

We first met these guys at the Blade Show in the summer of this year and we came away impressed. Since then, we had the opportunity to check out the Boker S2 which is a collaboration between Boker and Sniper Bladeworks; and we loved that knife as well. At this show, we got out hands on a prototype of the S1, which is the knife that the Boker S2 was based on. Production on Sniper Bladeworks is going to be picking up here, so if you’ve wanting one, keep checking BladeHQ for new knives from them.

Sniper Bladeworks S1:

Strider

We chatted with Strider and checked out all of their custom offerings at the show. They had some nice pieces, including a show special SMF with what they called a “Cracked Ice” finish, which we thought was pretty cool. The guys are really excited about a new Carpenter steel called PD01. Its wear resistance is similar to D2, but it has extra toughness.

 Custom Knifemakers

Brad Zinker

We really liked some of Brad’s custom knives that he had at this show. He makes a very nice “classic” pocket knife.

One of Brad’s “Lightning Strike” Carbon Fiber Customs:

Gale Force Customs

This brand new knifemaker, Jay Gale, impressed us at this show. We purchased one of the first knives he has ever made. It features polished lime green G-10 scales and carbon fiber bolsters over a thick titanium liner lock frame. The backspacer is stainless steel with notches and filework. This guy will be one to watch in the future.

Gale Force Custom for G3:

 Rick Hinderer

One of the stars of the show, Rick had some beautiful XM-24s at the show. We lucked out in the drawing, and were able to pick up one of customs. We also picked up some of Rick’s custom scales, and titanium pens all of which we are really excited about.

My Favorite Butterfly Knives in Every Price Range

I love butterfly knives. There is something so cool about flipping a great butterfly knife, and there really is no better way to impress your friends. All of my friends appreciate sweet butterfly flipping skills, and I imagine your friends are the same.

The challenge for a butterfly knife enthusiast is that there is a really wide variance in price and quality between knives. Some $20 butterfly knives are great, most of them aren’t. How are you supposed to know which are the good ones? Never fear, I am going to show you my favorite butterfly knives in every price range. That way, no matter what price point you are looking at, you will make sure to get something you will love.

Under $25

There are a lot of imported butterfly knives in this price range and the vast majority of them are poor quality. However, there are a couple of exceptions to this rule. If you can get your hands on a Darrel Ralph designed Twist, then snatch it up as fast as you can. They haven’t been made recently and are becoming more difficult to find.

Here is a picture, for reference:

Another of the standout knives in this price range is called the Regal butterfly knife. This knife has great flipping action and a solid feel. The only downside to this knife is that the handles are sort of rounded, so for some who prefer more grip, this may not be the knife for you.

$25-$50

There are actually very few butterfly knives in this price range, which is often lamented by enthusiasts. Bear and Son Knives make the only butterfly knife in this price range that I know about. They make a decent product that is a nice step up from the knives that are 10-15 dollars cheaper. My favorite is the Bear and Son 114 butterfly knife which is a great size and a good knife for the price.

$50-$100

This is another price range with almost no butterfly knives. But there is good news. The Bradley Kimura series are some of the best butterfly knives available. They are well constructed (made for Bradley by Kershaw) and have a great feel in the hand. This series features multiple blade styles. The Kimura I has been discontinued, and Bradley is in the process of releasing the Kimura VIII which will feature G-10 grips on the handles.

$100-$200

This price range features the Benchmade 51, which is a great butterfly knife. The 51 Morpho Balisong Butterfly is unique because it has a D2 steel blade and black G10 handles. This butterfly is a bit light for my taste but some people really love it. This knife also features a titanium carry-clip.

$200-$400

I almost didn’t put the Benchmade 42 down, but truthfully it would be a shame to not at least mention the most popular butterfly knife ever made. It is a great knife, and is a ton of fun to flip. If you are looking for one, I hope that you find one. As many of you will know, this knife is notoriously difficult to find. I have seen people pay as much as $600 for one, so you might wonder why I even put it in this price range. The truth is that even though the knife sells for that much, most of the time it can be found within this price range.

Here is a picture of the new upcoming Benchmade 42 Gold Class:

I have to include one more knife in this category, since the Benchmade 42 is so difficult to find. The Bradley Mayhem. Working with Benchmade, Bradley Cutlery has produced an truly exceptional butterfly knife. This knife is built to last using many of the same components found in much more expensive knives, including titanium handles and a S30V stainless steel blade.

$400 and Up

There are a lot of cool custom butterfly knives in this category, but one stands out in my opinion. The Les Voorhies Model 1 Bali is an amazing butterfly knife with a great weight and superior feel. The IKBS bearings system give this knife superb action that is second to none. This knife is smooth, and amazing.

Here is a video of some other cool custom butterfly knives:

Good luck on all of your butterfly knife hunting.

Knifemakers We Admire: Walter “Blackie” Collins

In case you haven’t heard, Walter “Blackie” Collins passed away in a motorcycle crash yesterday. We thought that we would take a minute to celebrate his career, since he has been one of the most influential knifemakers for decades.

As the legend goes, Blackie Collins knew that he wanted to make knives early. His second grade teacher at a small grammar school in South Carolina once asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. “I want to make guns and knives,” he answered. The teacher didn’t like that much. “She got a very stern look and said, ‘By the time you’re grown, there won’t be any more guns and knives,’ ” reflected Collins.

Luckily, this early detractor didn’t faze Blackie and he started tinkering with knives right away. His dream to become a knifemaker was fully realized in 1965 when he sold his first custom knife. Blackie then started his first shop in Atlanta, Ga in 1969, but has since moved it to North, South Carolina. (No, really I’m not making that up.)

He worked with Smith and Wesson during the 1970’s where he perfected many of his knife design techniques.

In 1970, Blackie was one of the founding members of the Knifemakers Guild.

He started Blade Magazine in 1973 (he has since sold it).

He has published several book about knives including: “How Knives are Made,” “Knife Throwing: Sport-Survival-Defense,” “How to Scrimshaw and Carve Ivory,” and “Personal Defense.”

In the 1980’s Blackie did some design work for Gerber Knives. He and Peter Gerber saw the practicality of using all synthetic handle materials, instead of bone or wood, which was being used exclusively at the time. The knife that resulted was the L.S.T. (Light Strong Touch) and was the first knife with a molded Zytel handle. It has been popular for over 20 years, and is still in the Gerber catalog today.

L.S.T.

During this time, Blackie Collins also saw the advantage of using a Cordura sheath for knives rather than leather which was also used exclusively. He started a nylon sheath making company which he sold to Fiskars (parent company of Gerber Knives).

He has patented several knife mechanisms. Included in this list is the Bolt Action Locking mechanism which has been used on several knives (including the Gerber Parabellum) and was recently honored by Spyderco in their “Sage” series.

Sage 3 with Bolt Action Lock

In 1996 Blackie Collins was inducted into the Cutlery Hall of Fame.

In 1996 he also partnered with Bill Meyer to create the knife company Meyerco. They were immediately pioneers in the knife world since they were the first company to release an assisted opening knife. Today Meyerco is credited with inventing the spring assisted knife.

In 1997 Blackie Collins and Meyerco won the “Most Innovative American Knife of the Year” Award for the Strut’N'Cut.

Blackie Collins actually holds over 60 patents on knife mechanisms and many design patents on cutlery products. He was a knifemaking legend, and will be sorely missed.
